SNAP Under 12 Outreach Project

Provides early intervention and treatment for boys aged 6 to 11 (they may stay involved as long as necessary, up to age 18) who have had, or are at risk of having, police contact. These children are involved in activities such as vandalism, aggressive or antisocial behaviour, arson or theft – activities that might result in charges but for their age.  They require assistance and treatment but do not meet the definition of “child in need of protection.”  The program aims to reduce repeat offending in the under-12 population, through timely and early intervention.

The program combines social learning and cognitive behavioural perspectives.  Interventions are aimed at the child, the family, teachers and community. The boys in SNAP® ORP participate in the SNAP® Club, a therapeutic/recreation evening group that meets weekly for 12 weeks.  The boys learn how to use SNAP® (Stop Now And Plan) to manage their behaviour.  Their parents attend concurrent SNAPP groups.

Other components of SNAP® ORP may include individual befriending by a staff or volunteer, connecting children to structured community and recreational activities, tutoring, school support and advocacy, family counselling, and victim restitution.  Groups are held at the St. Clair Gardens (St. Clair & Dufferin) location.
