Residential Program
The Residence provides a short-term, live-in experience for boys age 6-12 with severe disruptive disorders who are at serious risk of harm to themselves and others. In our safe, structured and predictable environment, the boys learn how to use SNAP® to control their anger, strengthen their cognitive and social skills, and learn creative problem solving. Some boys continue in their current school placements; however, the majority participates in our on-site school program.
The program promotes a partnership with families in all aspects of treatment. Parents regularly visit the residence and actively participate in their son’s treatment. Typically, children go home on weekends and holidays. Weekly parent groups, family therapy, parent counselling and home support are provided by the residential social worker. These services are also available after discharge.
Through the program, the boys and their families are connected with local community resources. Child Development Institute liaises with other community agencies to ensure coordination of services.
Boys may be referred by parents, schools, children’s aid societies or other agencies. The average length of stay ranges from six to twelve months.
The Residence is located at the St. Clair Gardens (St. Clair & Dufferin) location. There is no cost to parents. (Funding is provided by the Ontario Ministry of Community and Social Services and the Ministry of Child and Youth Services.)
